The Benbrook Early Childhood PTA (BECPTA) was established July 13, 1973 under the authority of the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers, as a support group for parents of children from birth through kindergarten age. As parents, our aim has always been to promote the welfare of our children, to learn to be better parents, and to take an active role in our community on behalf of our children. In addition to offering support and socialization to our members, we provide educational opportunities and encourage social interaction between our children.
Our founder, Pat Clayton, formed this group after having been a member of the Western Hills Preschool PTA. Flyers inviting moms to attend the first "Get Acquainted Coffee", held at Pat's house, were distributed by hand to local neighbors. Ten to twelve ladies attended, including Glenda Massey, Nelda Freeman, and Jacquie Messer, and word of the formation of this new group spread from there. However, in order to become an officially recognized PTA group, the National PTA requires a minimum of 20 members. Therefore, the founding members in 1973 consisted of both wives and husbands in order to meet this requirement, becoming a true family effort! These originators have stayed close personal friends and business partners over the past 30 years. Even though our name was formally changed to Benbrook Early Childhood PTA in 1993, and our membership now averages over 40, our mission and objectives remain the same.
